Turbulent poetry, proto-rap, political street speech, whatever you want to call it, it remains an effective voice for articulating the aggression, disillusionment and cacophony of messages we are meant to identify with in the West. This must be the reason why Kanye (with Bon Iver) sampled Gil Scott-Herron, again. He probably said those exact same word to Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) to get him to harmonize with a computer.

Haters gonna hate the vo-coder or the Louis Vuitton Don his-self, but it is difficult to fault this song. Lionel Richie, Gil Scott-Herron, indie love guru mixed lovingly in melamine bowl by the motherly, albeit crazy, Kayneezee.

The song brings to mind the energy and forcefulness of a time in which I wasn’t born, not even a glimmer in someone’s eye yet, but the impacts of which continues to resonate. Pictured above is Baynard Rustin, best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the United States. He’s the American Gandhi, rather he is Bayard Rustin. An openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era who led from the front and orchestrated Martin Luther King Jr.’s rise to international symbol of tolerance and peace.

What shall it be called? “Leaves Falling”? “Colder nights, warmer tights” (this one is for the ladies, only)? “Toques, beavers, sneezes, parkas – Canada’s Thanksgiving is better than Americas” (we did get to it first, ours is in October)?

So basically I took all the season’s best and rocked it in the over: leg of lamb, apples, fresh herbs, collard greens, squashes, zucchini, beets and wine.

I was also listening to Hervé This and Anthony Bourdain as background. I think those two would hate each other if they met in a Michael Jackson-from-”Bad”-esque, mutual-hetero-awesomeness, street fight scenario.

This is going to sound odd, but to flavour the leg, I made little slits in it, then stuffed in anchovies, garlic and rosemary (THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID!). The anchovies, while seemingly odd, just melted into the meat and added a dynamic saltiness that would be hard to get by just rubbing it on the top. Which according the This, doesn’t do much, and you would be better off adding salt at the end, unless you are brining.

Another trick, instead of using cheese cloth for bouquet garnis, use a tea steeper. It worked well, and is more reusable than your grandma’s boring old cheese cloth. Take that, grandma.

Here’s the stuffed bouquet garnis. It has sage, rosemary, thyme, marjoram, basil, chives and something I don’t remember. Either way, it totally worked.

The deliverables were experienced with proactive consultation, to borrow from project management jargon. Which is super unclear, if someone said that to you in real life would you:

A) Say, WTF?

B) Pop a cap in an ass?

C) Answer in equally uninteligble jargon?

D) All/none of the above?

Because a man has to be the total package these days (thanks, Feminism!), we need to know how to field dress a caribou as well as artfully arrange summer foliage for your special Lady.

This is what she gets for leaving me to my own devices! I also left a huge mess…in the garbage can, which I promptly threw out. After sorting the recycling! That’ll teach ‘er!

Also, I have no idea what these flowers are, except the sunflowers. Some of them might means things. Girls are so mysterious. I also started this project while listening to Sebastian Junger’s “War”.

There’s a hidden meaning to these flowers! Can you see it? It’s like Where’s Waldo, but no toque! And with moderately less alcohol consumption than Waldo (which rhymes with blotto, just sayin’).

Why didn’t anyone tell me flowers die!? Next you’re going to tell me that sweet grandmothers and puppies die? Man, how can “god” do this? Wasn’t he/she a landscape gardener? I mean, Eden, c’mon? Did he/she give Adam and Eve a riding mower at least?

This could be seen as a metaphor of some sort. Maybe one day, blogs will be the new Count of Monte Cristo, or Dickens. Can one secretly wish for something to become true but also not wish it to become true?
